Help Page, your questions contribute here! (anon-a-mously)

  1. How do I open a list?
  2. Where can I find committee members contacts?
  3. Why do the pages look different from different computers?
  4. Who is responsible for this web site?
  5. What is BPW?
  6. More than one window open, how?
  7. PDF, what is pdf?
  8. What's good about e-communication

How do I open a list? (only for Internet Explorer users)

Click on the list title, e.g., Newsletters 2000 and a list will drop down. Click on the item you want, and if it is associated with a file it will change colour. Click on it and a box will open, asking if you wish to open it or to save it.

Most of the files are in .pdf format, this adds to the security of club data. Click on one of the Adobe Acrobat logos you find for a free download to enable you to read these documents. You only need to download and install once, and from then on, Adobe will kick in when you open a .pdf file. You can download Adobe from here if you wish.

If you wish to read a document online and then close it and go on, click Open it. Be aware, if it is a newsletter with lots of graphics, it may be slow.

If you wish to save it to your system so you can print the document, check Save to disk. Then follow your usual steps of choosing the file destination and the file name. You must choose save up front, you cannot open on line to read and then save. If you change your mind after reading it online, and want to save it, you have to close it, then click on it again and choose the save option.

Where can I find committee member contacts?

Go to the Executive Committee page. Each member has their position, name, phone and fax number. Names are live, that is, if you click on them, they are linked directly to an email box.

Why do the pages look different on different computers?

  1. The screens are different sizes.
  2. The quality of screen colours are different.
  3. There a different browsers and they have different editing properties for handling the text and graphics that make a page.
  4. The text displayed is actually supported by your own computer, so if the web designer has used a font you do not have installed, then what you see will be  your computer default font in place of the fonts the web designer chose.
  5. The main browsers used are Internet Explorer and Netscape, but there are others. Try OPERA, it is fast and lean on memory. Or try Mozilla Firefox.
Internet Explorer, called IE  Netscape
allows collapsible lists does not allow collapsible lists
does not support blinking text supports blinking text
displays tables well needs extra space around words to display well
displays original line colour in tables etc sometimes defaults the line colour
fairly slow to open a document loaded with graphics fairly quick with graphic pages
displays marquees, the scrolling coloured text box does not display marquees,

Who is responsible for this web site?

BPW Pilbara has a web subcommittee who edits the pages when needed. If you have any suggestions, or want to join the sub-committee, approach a committee member. The sub-committee thanks Karratha Internet Support Services for the web space.

More than one window open, How?

Sometimes it is very convenient to open more than one browser window. For instance, you might be looking at Minutes and then want to check the calendar without really losing your place. Go to the What's On in the navigation bar at the left, and RIGHT CLICK on the link, and choose OPEN IN A NEW WINDOW. Then, both will be open, and you can toggle between the two screens of information with a mouse click or perhaps a tab key. You can have many windows open at a time, experiment with it.

PDF, What is pdf?

PDF documents are almost 'graphics' of an entire document. You can view and print and save the document, but you can never edit the content. This makes a document secure against being manipulated, being changed and misrepresented. It saves the integrity of the document and its content and meaning. and this is why BPW Pilbara has chosen pdf format to present minutes, agendas and newsletters. The following link is lifted from the British Medical Journal site, which has great pdf information. http://bmj.com/help/pdf-faq.dtl

You need to download Acrobat Reader, (free) to open and read pdf documents.

If you need help, ask, we can help you directly and we can add your enquiry, (anon),  to these pages to share our accumulated knowledge.
